Tips for Taking Care of New Sod Lawn

Sod is important as professional landscapers use it for making lawns. Sod is known to be a fake turf or surface and it includes a part of the soil with the roots in it.

Many landscapers use sod when planting a lawn and the process is quick, yet expensive. The professional workers in the field know exactly what to do to make the best for the lawn when using sod.

So, the first step in such an operation is to prepare the area that is meant for the lawn. The surface must be smooth, without any obstacles or other things on it, like logs, debris or stones.

The second step is to fertilize appropriately with a chemical combination of phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen, but this must be done without touching the roots as they can be damaged. The sod is then put in place and this operation must be carried out quickly as the sod can dry out very fast. It is preferable to apply the sod on a plain surface, but if there are slopes on the terrain, it is best to put the sod in order to avoid water flooding.

After it is put into place, sod must be irrigated two or three times per day, but it must not become too wet, so excess watering of the sod should be avoided. In the beginning, until the roots are solidly stuck in the ground, nobody should pass and walk on the lawn as the damage is not negligible. Also, the pets must be kept away for the same reason, as they can dig the soil and make permanent damage. The new sod must be mowed after two weeks from installation. To keep the sod lawn in shape for a long time, fertilize once a month.

There are several problems that might appear even with all the precautionary measures taken. If the sod does not root, this can be caused by too much shade or too much water. Irrigating the soil needs special attention; too frequent or less watering can lead to problems. First, the sprinkler must be adjusted so the area is uniformly watered. When mushrooms appear on the soil, less water is needed to eliminate them, but this can cause the sod edges to shrivel.
